The department of computer networks was created in 1986 simultaneously with the creation of the faculty of information and computer science (ICS) in the YaSU; however, it had been called the department of data processing systems up to 2001. Within this framework, the department trained specialists in the field of computing machinery of complexes and networks. The department directly participated in the research devoted to the development of system software within the project of creating a Russian supercomputer; its first chair was Professor V.A. Kurchidis. Since 2001, the department was headed by V.V. Mayorov, Doct. Sc. (Physics and Mathematics), Professor. It was renamed in the department of computer networks. Since 2009, the department is managed by S.D. Glyzin, Doct. Sc. (Physics and Mathematics).

The scientific work performed in the department is largely devoted to studying the dynamic properties of neuron network models described by the system equations with retardation.
The department created two scientific seminars, which are functioning now. One of them aims at studying neuron networks and associations, while the other (joint with the department of mathematic modeling at the mathematical faculty) is devoted to various issues of non-linear dynamics and synergetics.
The specialists of the department participate actively in the issue of a scientific journal Modelirovanie i Analiz Informatsionnyh Sistem (modelling and analysis of information systems).

Professor S.D. Glyzin performs the duties of the deputy editor-in-chief of this journal, while the assistant professor A.O. Tolbei is a member of technical editorial board.

Almost half of the students who follow the course of Applied Mathematics and Information Science undergo specialized training in this department.
